Artists' Acrylics can be used with a large selection of mediums to enable you to modify the performance of your colour and to create an endless variety of textures and effects.
With the addition of mediums, acrylics can be used in a fluid, gestural manner (much like watercolour) or in heavier applications (as with oils) or they can -
be shaped and carved, used for print making or in virtually any other technique imaginable.
Winsor & Newton offer a range of Acrylic Colour mediums and Galeria mediums that are perfectly suited to Artists' Acrylics. Here is a taster of the types of mediums we offer.

If you are looking to maintain the consistency of the colour whilst improving the flow and transparency then we recommend that you use Acrylic Matt Medium or Acrylic Gloss Medium or Galeria Matt or Gloss Medium. Colours will remain usable slightly longer when mixed with these mediums.

The fluid consistency of Acrylic Fluid Matt Medium or Acrylic Fluid Gloss Medium is excellent for glazing and staining techniques. The results are much more stable than when thinning with water alone. Acrylic Flow Improver increases the staining of raw canvas. It also improves the flow of colour without any loss in colour strength, which makes it great for staining.

Acrylic Gloss Gel Medium and Galeria Structure Gel thicken the consistency of acrylic colours, accentuating brush marks and textures in the painting. They can also be used to extend the colour. If working in heavy impasto, try Heavy Carvable Modelling Paste for carvable impasto or Heavy Structure Gel for great brushstroke retention.

Galeria texture gels offer a range of aggregate textures within heavier acrylic gels. They are suitable for any application in which highly unique surface textures are desired. Texture Gel ranges from Medium Grain Gel to Glass Beads to Natural Sand. Both the fine artist and the craft user of acrylics can rely upon a selection of textures with greater stability than those mixed by the artist in the studio.

Don't forget to protect your finished works with our uniquely removable varnishes which ensure your paintings can be cleaned in the future. We have a range of Galeria acrylic varnishes to choose from that offer different finishes: Galeria Gloss, Matt & Satin Varnishes.

If the acrylic is drying too quickly, Acrylic Retarder can be mixed with the colour. This gives more blending time on the canvas and slower drying on the palette.
